Växjö, pronounced veck-wuh, are the upstart team of the SHL.
Formed relatively recently, by Swedish hockey standards, in 1998, they got promoted to the SHL in 2013. They’ve not only stayed there ever since, they have thrived. Växjö won the first Gold Medal in only their fourth top-tier season (2014-15) and have since added three more titles, the most recent coming in 2023.
Four Gold Medals in 11 seasons (which you could reduce to 10 given that the 2020 play-offs were cancelled due to the Covid pandemic) is an incredible haul. The level of their success in such a short time does make them a target for green-eyed fans of other teams, though, albeit this is a burden Växjö’s own fans are quite happy to shoulder.
