SHL: Update after Saturday 20 January

by Matthew Smith

Both Växjö and Färjestad picked up victories on Saturday, meaning that there remains two points between them at the top of the Swedish Hockey League.

Leksands have moved up to third following their 3-2 home win against HV71 and SkellefteÃ¥’s 3-1 loss at home against Frölunda.

Örebro and Malmö both continued their poor recent form by going down 4-0 to Växjö and Luleå respectively; however, HV71 and Oskarshamn were unable to claw back points on them as they both suffered defeats too.

It’s a busy week ahead, with three games on Tuesday and then all of the teams in action on both Thursday and Saturday. Before then, let’s take a look at some of the individual player ranking lists.

Linköping’s Ty Rattie continues to lead the way as the only player currently on a point-per-game pace. He’s already 1 point ahead of his season total in 2022/23 and will be looking to better his total of 47 that he amassed with TimrÃ¥ in 2021/22.

David Tomasek scored 9 seconds into the Second Period of Färjestad’s game against Rögle on Saturday, extending their lead to 2 goals and putting them on the way to a 3-0 home win.

Linköping’s Patrick Russell joins the leader board thanks to his hat-trick on Saturday in a 3-0 win away to MoDo. He has been in a golden patch of form of late: after scoring 5 goals in his first 24 games he’s now scored 8 in his last 9 games.

Elsewhere, Oscar Eklind scored twice on Saturday in LuleÃ¥’s 4-0 win against Malmö

At the other end of the ice, Växjö’s Adam Ã…hman has really stepped up for his team of late and celebrated a clean sheet on Saturday in their 4-0 win over Örebro.

Meanwhile, Matteus Ward has played a key role in LuleÃ¥’s recent run of four wins in a row. During that spell, he has conceded only two goals: one each against HV71 and Rögle plus a clean sheet against Oskarshamn and then Malmö on Saturday.
